I work on tools that help surgeons find things inside the body. These days that means breast tumour localization at Stryker; before that, a PhD at UBC on guiding orthopaedic surgery with ultrasound instead of X-rays.

01Highlights

Selected work

A few projects I’ve worked on, most of them with great teams.

Medical devices

MOLLI 2 tumour localization

At MOLLI Surgical I was part of the team behind MOLLI 2, a wire-free system that helps surgeons find breast tumours during surgery, and I’m one of its inventors. It was cleared by the US FDA in January 2023, and MOLLI is now part of Stryker.

Patents

Surgical localization inventions

Four pending patent families with colleagues at MOLLI Surgical and Stryker on magnetic and ultrasound localization of breast lesions, including using neural networks to filter out magnetic interference.

PhD research

Radiation-free surgical navigation

One of my PhD projects, NOFUSS (Navigated Orthopaedic Fixation using UltraSound System), guides screw insertion for pelvic fractures with ultrasound instead of X-rays. In a cadaver study it was as accurate as fluoroscopy, with no radiation during surgery and quicker screw insertion.

Open data

An open ultrasound bone benchmark

BonUS brings together ultrasound bone images from eight institutions in six countries, with a shared way to evaluate segmentation methods. I proposed and coordinated it, and the datasets are free to use on Harvard Dataverse.

Medical AI

AI retinal screening

With Dr. Jovi Wong, I led engineering for Retinographer, which aims to bring retinal screening to rural and remote Canada. In our study, a CNN ensemble detected four retinal diseases more accurately than seven ophthalmologists (79.2% vs 72.7%).

Teaching

AI in Medicine workshops

Co-designed an introduction to AI for medical students with the UBC AI in Medicine and Queen’s Innovation in Medicine clubs. The 2020 virtual run reached 222 students from eight Canadian medical schools.
