NOFUSS

2019–2023

PhD research · University of British Columbia

Navigated Orthopaedic Fixation using Ultrasound System. Pelvic fractures are usually fixed with iliosacral screws inserted under fluoroscopy, which exposes patients and staff to radiation. NOFUSS replaces fluoroscopy with a conventional ultrasound probe and an optical tracking camera: it segments bone surfaces automatically, registers them to the patient’s CT scan and guides the surgeon with targeting displays validated in a user study.

In surgeries on eight human cadavers, NOFUSS matched the screw-entry accuracy of fluoroscopy, needed no intraoperative radiation, and reduced median insertion time from 12 min 36 s to 7 min 37 s per screw.

BonUS (Bone in Ultrasound)

2019–2026

Project lead · eight-institution collaboration

Published ultrasound bone segmentation methods were usually validated on their authors’ own data with their own metrics, which made them hard to compare. I proposed and coordinated an open, multi-institution dataset with a standard evaluation framework, built with partners in Canada, the USA, Mexico, France, Germany and the Netherlands, then benchmarked published algorithms on it. The anonymized datasets are now public on Harvard Dataverse.

Retinographer

2020–2023

Engineering Lead · with Dr. Jovi Wong

Retinographer is a project dedicated to making retinal disease screening more accessible to rural and remote parts of Canada. We are aiming to build a cheap device, powered by artificial intelligence, that can be used by frontline healthcare workers to screen patients’ retinas. This can help identify patients who require specialized care, which is often located in large cities, and those patients who do not.

The deep-learning models behind it were published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology: an ensemble of CNNs that classified fundus photographs more accurately than board-certified ophthalmologists, and latent diffusion models that generate realistic retinal images to augment training data. I also developed hardware and algorithms to automate screening with smartphone cameras. The project received a Joule Innovation Grant from the Canadian Medical Association.

AI in Medicine workshops

2020–2021

Curriculum co-designer · UBC & Queen’s University

A student-led introduction to artificial intelligence for medical students, run by the UBC AI in Medicine and Queen’s Innovation in Medicine clubs. I co-designed the course content and, with Ricky Hu, the programming examples, which I adapted into tutorials on this site. The 2020 virtual run drew 222 medical students from eight Canadian medical schools; the lessons learned were published in Communications Medicine.

SMOO, a smart white-noise machine

An adaptive white-noise machine that listens for crying with Google’s YAMNet audio model on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, turns the noise up when it hears it, and eases off as things calm down. Comes with a mobile-friendly control panel.
